SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY!
We caught up with Richard Cumming, Owner of Sirology, Batchen Street, Elgin.
What inspired you to start your small business? I have always wanted to run a shop as a kid, my dad and grandfathers both did it – it was in my blood I guess.
What’s the story behind your business name? Sirology came from a few drinks after trying to think time and time again. Was sitting having a few cocktails and mixology sprung to mind…and sir soon replaced mix.
What do you enjoy most about running your own business? I am passionate about what I do and our town – I get to be a part of its present and future.
What’s been the most rewarding moment in your journey as a small business owner? Re-opening post covid. It was brutal on small businesses and even though I sell daily products like soap, shaving etc I was not allowed to open like others were.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced, and how did you overcome it? Taking sole ownership of the business – I knew what I wanted to deliver and fortunately I have delivered that to my customers.
How has being a small business shaped the way you approach customer relationships? Customers are key and recognising them and being grateful for them supporting my wee dream. I also now appreciate other businesses and what we have in Moray much more.
What lessons have you learned about entrepreneurship that you wish you knew when you started? Social media is more important than anything else to get noticed – you can try a million different methods but presence on Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok etc is key.
What’s one thing you wish more people knew about the products or services you offer? I am not a beard shop, I sell beard products but actually sell more shaving and fragrances than beard products. Also ‘he wouldn’t use it’ scares me – he won’t use soap or shower gel? Haha!
Are there any interesting trends you’re seeing in your industry? Traditional shaving is becoming more and more popular – less plastics, more economical and a way better shave!
What’s a typical day like for you as a small business owner? Every day is a work day – there are not days off!
What do you do to stay motivated and inspired? Working out keeps my head clear and allows me to also generate business when meeting new people.
Who has been your biggest influence or source of support in your business journey? There are some amazing local business owners who are always a great support – shout out to a few Laura from The Ditsy Teacup, Faith from Scribbles and The Deli Next Door and a few others.
How can customers best support your business, both during the festive period and year-round? Come and see what I have to offer or visit my website. Use your local gifts cards like the Moray Gift Card – treat yourself and help our small businesses.
What does being part of the small business community mean to you? Everything, if it wasn’t for key local business owners I would not still be here. They are a great support and sounding board. We are have wobbles, hard times and awful days – I am lucky my friends in business appreciate that and are willing to listen as I am to them.
