SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY!
We caught up with Adelle Morris of AM Employment Law.
What inspired you to start your small business?
I am extremely passionate about my work and care about each of my clients and starting my own business meant that I could run my business and provide a service exactly as I wanted. I also wanted to ensure a future for my young family where I could work flexibly and achieve the work/life balance we all strive to achieve.
What’s been the most rewarding moment in your journey as a small business owner?
One of the most rewarding moments is being responsible for recruiting my brilliant team who work alongside me. It has meant that I have been able to employ people who share the same enthusiasm for our work, and who have the right mix of professionalism and approachability to maintain the high standards of friendly service I aim to provide.
How has being a small business shaped the way you approach customer relationships?
I believe I am able to provide a more personal, tailored service to my clients, without having the same restrictions that I would have had as a solicitor in a bigger law firm.
What’s one thing you wish more people knew about the products or services you offer?
That it’s much better to get us involved at an early stage, rather than coming to us for advice when in crisis-mode! For example, laying the groundwork with contracts of employment and policies means that employers are better equipped to deal with any employment issues that may arise.
What’s a typical day like for you as a small business owner?
I tend to wake up early and get some work done before 7am. This usually involves some ‘behind the scenes’ work including banking, social media, website etc. I then start work again around 9am which involves providing legal advice to employer and employee clients via telephone, email and remote meetings; and lots of reading and drafting. Being based in Elgin and having many local clients, I also regularly attend face to face meetings and provide employment law training for my employer clients. I then switch to Mum mode when my daughters get home from school, and work again in the evening, subject to any pressing deadlines. Every day is so varied in employment law, it keeps things interesting!
