Onshore Wind Industry Taskforce Statement from co-chair Matthieu Hue, Chief Executive, EDF Renewables UK

19 July 2024 • Sarah Medcraf

The UK Government has announced the formation of a new Onshore Wind Industry Taskforce which aims to bring together key players from government, industry, regulatory bodies, the financial sector and other relevant organisations to drive forward the increases in onshore wind deployment needed to meet the UK’s 2030 targets.

The Taskforce will be jointly chaired by the UK Government’s Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP and Chief Executive of EDF Renewables UK, Matthieu Hue.

Matthieu Hue, Chief Executive of EDF Renewables UK commented: “Onshore wind is already well established in many parts of the UK and is one of the most cost effective forms of new electricity generation that can be developed at pace and at scale. However, if we are to achieve our net zero ambitions, we need to accelerate its deployment and tackle some of the challenges facing our industry, such as grid and supply chain pressures.

“Onshore wind is known to bring many socio-economic benefits. In particular, we know from our extensive work in onshore wind that local communities benefit greatly from projects in their region – from local jobs to funds that support local initiatives - and we look forward to sharing these benefits with even more communities.

“I am delighted to be co-chairing the Taskforce with the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP and together leading the industry and government to working more closely and creating practical solutions to overcome barriers to accelerate our journey to achieving net zero.”
