Moray Council agree car parks in Elgin will be FREE on Saturdays

22 November 2023 • Sarah Medcraf

Moray Council has agreed car parking in its car parks in Elgin will be free on Saturdays to promote shops and facilities in the run up to Christmas.

The scheme is an extension of the council’s Christmas shopping car parking promotion called ‘Free After 3’.

Free After 3 offers free parking in St Giles car park in Elgin on weekdays after 3pm, starting between Monday 27 November 2023 - Friday 5 January.

The free Saturday parking in Moray Council's Elgin car parks offer applies on Saturdays between 25 November and 23 December.

Sarah Medcraf CE of Moray Chamber of Commerce says: "I am pleased Moray Council listened to the call from Moray Chamber of Commerce regarding parking in Elgin. Whilst we still hoped to see some movement for visitors and workers during the week, we warmly welcome the free Saturday parking. Our businesses need us to shop local now, more than ever, so please use this incentive to visit the town."

It is being funded by Elgin councillors with £11,000 from the Elgin Common Good Fund and £6,000 from the River Lossie Trust, which they also administer.

Moray Council Chief Executive, Roddy Burns, said: “We’re grateful to the Elgin councillors for choosing to use the discretionary funding to put this measure in place. It will allow us to promote our parking facilities and Elgin town centre’s range of shops and businesses. It also provides a gesture of goodwill to residents, recognising that there has been a reduction in available parking and preferred locations while Batchen Lane Multi-Storey has been undergoing repairs. The whole offer represents collaborative working across parties from the Elgin ward members.”
