Coffee shop boom fuels the first ever ‘Moray Coffee Week’ festival

11 April 2023 • Sarah Medcraf

Sixteen coffee businesses across Moray have united to co-host a week-long festival, for locals and tourists alike.

Moray Coffee Week is from 19th - 26th May 2023, with 16 different locations to visit, each offering a selection of events and outdoor adventures across Morayshire - Designed by Spotlight On Moray, in collaboration with Visit Moray Speyside, the festival celebrates the uplifting coffee culture of roasteries, cafes and coffee shops on wheels; from the creative town of Forres, up to the exhilarating trails of Glenlivet, to the sunset bay of Cullen.

Unique in its approach, Moray Coffee Week blends the enjoyment of a great cup of coffee, with adventuring across Moray’s world-class walking, hiking and biking trails. In addition, the county-wide festival is hosting various community events and a research project to establish how used coffee grounds can be recycled, marking the start of a bigger question: “Has the coffee shop boom provided the opportunity to design a more circular practice surrounding coffee shop waste”?

The week-long experience, rooted in community, aims to elevate the coffee businesses who continue to bring their ‘A-Game’ every week. Whether it be a specialty coffee on the menu, an organic-first roastery, or a talented barista producing stunning coffee art; this festival celebrates the people who persevered through lockdown, or had the ambition to start a coffee business shortly afterwards, resulting in the coffee shop boom we see today.

“We are delighted to be a part of this great initiative, showcasing the wonderful businesses offering quality produce in Moray Speyside. With operating for less than a year, we have been overwhelmed with the support from both locals, regulars and other like-minded businesses.”
~ Jodi Turner, The Patch Speyside

“A good cup of coffee, served to perfection and enjoyed in a great location, either on your own or shared over cake with friends is a great pick me up. The café, located at Logie Steading offers the perfect location to enjoy a coffee after an energetic walk or cycle, a quiet stroll, or with a book bought from the independent bookshop across the courtyard.”
~ Claire Doughty, The Café at Logie Steading

“Visit Moray Speyside is delighted to support Spotlight On Moray with the innovative and exciting Moray Coffee Week. We welcome this new initiative which highlights the fantastic range of coffee houses and short walks throughout Moray Speyside. This will not only encourage people to enjoy the outdoors but will also enhance the appeal of the area as a visitor destination.”
~ Chief Executive Officer, Visit Moray Speyside

About Moray Coffee Week & the sustainability project

Moray Coffee Week is completely free for coffee businesses to be a part of. This is to help support them, at a time when the financial climate is challenging.

The county-wide research project surrounding how to better recycle waste coffee grounds has a number of community groups involved in the conversation, including community gardens, coffee shops, the school of Design and Innovation on Altyre Estate (part of Glasgow School of Art), as well as local sustainability consultants from Moray.
