Clan raises £17,000 with launch of special events programme to celebrate anniversary

19 October 2023 • Sarah Medcraf

Clan Cancer Support has launched a special events programme to celebrate the charity’s tenth anniversary in Moray, with plans for ten fundraising events throughout the year to mark the milestone.

The charity’s 2023 Cavalcade kickstarted the celebrations, with 20 classic car and motorcycle drivers taking a scenic trip to some of the north-east’s most prolific steel and metal workshops in September to raise more than £14,000 for the charity.

A further £3,000 was raised at the charity’s birthday quiz night with 140 guests attending the event at the Elgin District Ex-Serviceman’s Club on Saturday, October 14.

The next event planned is a Brickwalk Challenge which encourages fundraisers from as young as five years old to walk barefoot across thousands of pieces of Lego from 12-2pm on Sunday, January 21, at Elgin Town Hall.

Registration for the event is now open with fees priced from £10 per child and £45 per family. Spectators are encouraged to attend this family friendly event with face painting and refreshments on offer on the day.

Julie Ferguson, Clan’s Moray local services co-ordinator said: “We are very excited to unveil a new events programme to celebrate ten years of Clan in Elgin and we’d like to thank everyone who has shown support so far by taking part in either the Clan Cavalcade or our Birthday Quiz.

“Both events were hugely successful and have resulted in a fantastic amount of money being raised to help Clan provide physical and emotional support to people of all ages in the Moray region who have been impacted by a cancer diagnosis.

“Our upcoming Brickwalk Challenge promises to be another popular event and we look forward to people of all ages joining us at Elgin Town Hall in January 2024 for what we are sure will be a great day out for all of the family.”

The charity is planning to unveil at least seven more events as part of its anniversary year in Elgin, including a golf day and a ceilidh dinner dance in 2024 with more details due to be released shortly.

The anniversary year is being supported by Cathedral Windows with the local business also coordinating a number of events in honour of Clan throughout the year.

Julie Fraser, director at Cathedral Windows, said: “Cathedral Windows has the great privilege of being Clan’s neighbours. Clan is all about community which is a value deeply embedded in our own ethos.

“We take immense pride in our ongoing support for Clan and are committed to redoubling our efforts as we unite in celebration of their fantastic 10th Anniversary through a series of dedicated fundraising events.”

Clan’s Elgin centre was officially opened by Princess Anne in 2013 following the charity being established in Aberdeen in 1983.

The charity offers a listening and support service for anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis, a dedicated children and families team to help young people and their loved ones navigate a cancer journey and NHS aligned complementary therapies.

The centre on Elgin’s High Street is open from 10am – 4pm on Monday to Thursday with support available on a drop-in basis or by appointment.

Minimum sponsorship applies for all Brickwalk Challenge participants. For more information and to register please visit: https://www.clancancersupport.org/fundraising/events/clan-brickwalk/
