Benromach Distillery is celebrating a quarter increase in turnover for its owners.
Speymalt Whisky Distributors Ltd’s - trading as Gordon & MacPhail - annual results for the year ended February 28, 2023 demonstrate a 24 per cent sales increase in turnover to £46.5m and an increase in pre-tax profit from £10.4m to £17.4m.
Managing director at Gordon & MacPhail, Ewen Mackintosh, said: “It is pleasing to see the business have such a strong financial year, with the contribution of Gordon & MacPhail Generations 80 Years Old and the ongoing growth of Benromach. Over the last few months we have evolved our business, delivering on our strategic plan to focus on the company’s own brands.”
Contributing to the strong performance was the successful release of Gordon & MacPhail Generations 80 Years Old, the company’s oldest single malt to date.
Benromach continued to be a significant contributor to the success, with sales and volumes increasing by 9.5 per cent and 14.5 per cent respectively.
During the year, Gordon & MacPhail opened its second whisky distillery, The Cairn, in the Cairngorm National Park, which is part of the company’s focus on securing the long-term future of its own brands.
Earlier in the year, the company announced its intention to no longer fill spirits into casks from distilleries not owned by Gordon & MacPhail, to focus its long-term future on whiskies from Benromach and The Cairn.
A further demonstration of the company’s investment is the refurbishment of its premises at South Street, Elgin, a multimillion-pound transformation into a major visitor attraction in 2024.
The spiritual home of Gordon & MacPhail, which opened its doors in 1895, South Street will offer a unique whisky experience to visitors from around the world, incorporating displays, tasting rooms and a liquid library of some of the world’s rarest whiskies, when it reopens in 2024.
