Clockstudio

Please name the main purpose of your business.
Clockstudio is a design studio, run by me, Clare Lock. I help companies make an impact through their marketing material.
I design every visual element a business might need, from logo design, rebrands, stationery, brochures, leaflets, newsletters, adverts, pull-up banners… and anything else that gets printed.

What are the benefits to operating in Moray?
I love working with local companies! Being able to meet clients, see their premises and meet their staff makes a huge difference to fully understanding a business and translating that into designs that work for them. Knowing the local market and its locality also benefits the advice I give to clients. Whilst I still do work with clients further afield – I enjoy most working with locally based businesses.

How do you connect to your local customers?
I established Clockstudio in 1999 and networking has always been a big part of my business. The majority of projects I can track back to someone I’ve met at some point. I’m a member of Moray Business Women (President in 2020), and Moray Chamber. Clockstudio has a website, and I also use Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Why are you part of Moray Chamber of Commerce?
To meet other like-minded people that are passionate about their business. I really enjoy hearing about other peoples companies – the challenges they face, their wins and how I might be able to help, or connect them with someone that might benefit their business. I’ve found time and time again – it’s not what you know, but who you know.

What are you most proud of?
I’m immensely proud that I’ve been running Clockstudio for over 23 years. One client, Memoria has been with me since the very start – they started with owning one crematorium, they now have 13 around the UK. It’s been great to be part of their journey and success.

Being a preferred supplier to some of the biggest corporate names in the UK – BMW UK Manufacturing, Biffa UK, KFC, plus many local companies; Moray Council, Aberdeenshire Council, Living Streets Scotland, Dean’s of Huntly, makes me feel really proud - that a small business like mine that can make a difference to the world of design. Never think that your business is too small to compete in a big arena!

I’m proud of every project I work on, but some stand out more than others, for varying reasons. Designing the KFC menu boards for the very first KFC restaurant in Russia (in Russian!). I designed the logo for Shetland Reel Gin – now a successful gin brand being sold all over the world. Designing the entrance banners at BMW Plant Oxford where the MINI is built, and more recently designing logos for Cullen and Lossiemouth – both putting themselves firmly on the map for Moray and tourism. And of course, the logo for Moray Chamber of Commerce! I worked on this logo design a few years ago and I love how it’s always used consistently, helping the Chamber to build its brand awareness. If I could give an example of how branding should be done, the Chamber would be it!

Finally, name one misconception that people have about your business.
The main misconception is that once I’ve designed a logo for a company they don’t need my services any more. Getting a new logo is just the start! I can help implement it onto everything a business needs to promote itself – from business cards, to brochures, leaflets, newsletters, pull-up banners…. Working with a designer should be an ongoing relationship, where the designer can help and support a company with every visual aspect of its business.
